Byzantium Altered Book

Byzantine art refers to the body of Christian Greek artistic products of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, as well as the nations and states that inherited culturally from the empire. It stems from the middle ages when knowledge and learning were not celebrated but reserved for the religious elite. Culture and the arts were dead and only religious iconography were allowed. It is my least favorite era in art history as it is flat and ill proportioned, lacking expression of any sort. I had an old book about the period and felt the need to “improve” it. So, I made it into an altered book. Altered books are a bit controversial as some might consider them a form of censorship or destruction. But if it was going to be thrown out or has sat on a shelf for forty years, as this one has, then what’s the harm?
